The Bosphorus or Bosporus (Greek: Βόσπορος), also known as the Istanbul Strait (Turkish: İstanbul Boğazı), is a strait that forms part of the boundary between the European part of Turkey (Thrace) and its Asian part (Anatolia). It is one of the Turkish Straits, along with the Dardanelles. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, it connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara (which is connected by the Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea, and thereby to the Mediterranean Sea). It is approximately 30 km (19 mi) long, with a maximum width of 3,700 m (12,139 ft) at the northern entrance, and a minimum width of 700 m (2,297 ft) between Kandilli and Aşiyan; and 750 m (2,461 ft) between Anadoluhisarı and Rumelihisarı. The depth varies from 36 to 124 m (118 to 407 ft) in midstream. The shores of the strait are heavily populated as the city of Istanbul (with a metropolitan area in excess of 11 million inhabitants) straddles it.
Two bridges cross the Bosporus. The first, the Bosphorus Bridge, is 1,074 m (3,524 ft) long and was completed in 1973. The second, Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Bosphorus II) Bridge, is 1,090 m (3,576 ft) long, and was completed in 1988 about 5 km (3 mi) north of the first bridge. Plans for a third road bridge, which will allow transit traffic to by-pass the city traffic, have been approved by the Ministry of Transportation. The bridge will be part of the "Northern Marmara Motorway", which will be further integrated with the existing Black Sea Coastal Highway. The location will be somewhere north of the existing two bridges, but the exact path is kept secret to prevent false rumour trading of lands on the possible routes.[1]
Another crossing, Marmaray, is a 13.7 km (8.5 mi) long undersea railway tunnel currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2012. Approximately 1,400 m (4,593 ft) of the tunnel will run under the strait, at a depth of about 55 m (180 ft).

1 Vote(s)

The Golden Horn (Greek, Χρυσόν Κέρας: Chrysón Kéras; Turkish, Haliç or Altın Boynuz) is a historic inlet of the Bosphorus dividing the city of Istanbul and forming the superb natural harbor that has sheltered Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and other ships for thousands of years. It is a scimitar-shaped estuary that joins the Bosphorus just at the point where that strait enters the Sea of Marmara, thus forming a peninsula the tip of which is "Old Istanbul" (ancient Byzantion and Constantinople). Its Greek and English names mean the same, but the significance of the designation "golden" is obscure. It has witnessed many tumultuous historical incidents and its dramatic vistas have been the subject of countless works of art.

1 Vote(s)

For centuries, pleasure combined with practicality in the hammams, or bathhouses, of Istanbul, where everyone from the humblest worker to the sultan himself regularly kept clean by indulging in the local tradition of a steam bath and professional body scrub. With the rise of modern bathrooms during the past 50 years, the tradition threatened to die out. Private bathing facilities replaced public hammams, and private hammams in the city's great houses became too expensive to maintain. Many of the city's most treasured hammam buildings, often important works of Ottoman architecture, have been converted into everything from cafes to warehouses.

2 Vote(s)

Hagia Sophia (Turkish: Ayasofya) is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and to have "changed the history of architecture." It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Seville Cathedral in 1520.

The current building was originally constructed as a church .In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by Sultan Mehmed II ordered the building to be converted into a mosque. It remained as a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.

For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many of the Ottoman mosques such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul), the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.

2 Vote(s)

Hotel Ayasofya was built in the 19th Century as a private Ottoman home in the traditional wooden style. In 1990 it opened as a Special Historic Class Hotel and since then has offered Turkish hospitality to guests all over the world. In April 2009 an Australian woman from Melbourne, Gaye Reeves, took over the hotel and has upgraded the comforts in the rooms and enhanced this beautiful Ottoman buiding.

Nestled beneath the ancient walls of The Hippodrome the Hotel Ayasofya is just 350 metres from the Blue Mosque. Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia the Bascillica Cistern and the tramline are all within walking distance. Although so close to the wonderful sites of Byzantium Istanbul, Ayasofya is located in a charming quiet local street, among Turkish people. Children play in the streets, women gossip from their windows and local life goes on around us. You can relax without the hassle of traders and feel part of a local community.

2 Vote(s)

Fatih (English: Conqueror) is one of the largest and central districts of Istanbul, Turkey, in the heart of the city. Since it constitutes the old quarter of the city that was taken by Mehmed the Conqueror on May 29, 1453, even today it is also called the "real Istanbul" or the "first Istanbul" (previously, the district of Eminönü at the tip of the historic peninsula was also a part of the Fatih district. Today, the districts of Fatih and Eminönü comprise the historic peninsula up to the Theodosian land walls at the western end of the old city center, i.e. the areas which together constituted the Byzantine capital Constantinople.)
Fatih sits within the Roman walls, is home to the Fatih Mosque, the first Ottoman imperial mosque in Istanbul, and the second prominent Ottoman mosque in the city after the Eyüp Sultan Mosque which is just outside the land walls, near the Golden Horn. Since it is the primary historical area of the city, it contains some of the most important historical monuments in Istanbul.

1 Vote(s)

The current mosque, which was erected in its place, was ordered by the Ottoman sultan Abdülmecid and built between 1854 and 1856. Its architects were Armenian father and son Garabet Amira Balyan and Nigoğayos Balyan (who also designed the nearby Dolmabahçe Palace), who designed it in Neo-Baroque style. Within the mosque hang several examples of Islamic calligraphy executed by the Sultan Abdülmecid himself, who was also a hattat (master calligrapher).
The wide, high windows let the ever-changing light reflections of the Bosphorus shine in the mosque.

3 Vote(s)
